‘The Hatch’ is our three-day exhibition over the RAW weekend, centred around nurturing, celebrating and show-casing emerging artists from the Whaingaroa community. Featuring 15 artists in 2024, it will explore creative expression through a range of mediums and artistic traditions, including acrylic and oil, raranga, clay, photography, digital design and woodwork.
The Hatch was new to RAW for 2023, and was made possible with joint funding from Rangitahi Peninsula and from the Waikato District Council Creative Communities.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE HATCH?
The name ‘The Hatch’ represents the process of nurturing and the incubation of new life. It’s also representative of a doorway which points to the transitioning of creative practice and experience. At ‘The Hatch’, we facilitate collaboration, connection and the building of artist portfolios in a non-threatening environment. Artists also receive guidance and mentorship for exhibiting work, where required.
All our artists in ‘The Hatch’ are emerging in profile but shining a light on what is creatively possible in a community characterised by its artistic exploration.
